Did you know that Bluebirds can begin nesting here in Georgia as early as February? That's why I took advantage of good weather this week and got the yard ready for nesting season. The very next day this Bluebird began checking out one of the boxes.
Preparing my yard for nesting season is easy. All I did was:
- Clean boxes and convert roosting boxes to nest boxes.
-
Put out pine straw by the lake because Bluebirds use the needles for nesting material. Adding pine straw makes nest building easier because over the years pine straw has become less available. Many
pine trees in the neighborhood fell prey to pine borers during the drought. Also, at one time pine straw was the mulch of choice, but most people have now switched to cypress mulch.
- Fill an old suet feeder with cat hair and dryer lint to line nests.
Last year the Chickadees claimed the lakeside nest box before the Bluebirds could move in. Let's hope the Bluebirds don't dither this year and grab that prime real estate before those pushy Chickadees pounce!
