Cold weather must be especially hard for birds. In the last few weeks they've been flocking to the feeders and regularly visiting the heated birdbaths. Even though it's a chore to fill the feeders in the cold, the birds depend on the seeds to get through the winter. That's why I don't mind putting out some extra treats--like dried mealworms. They're disgusting, but birds really go for them. This morning I put some on the deck railing and was rewarded with a steady parade of colorful visitors. Nice way to start the day!
