The picture of my recently pruned Yaupon holly is a reminder that large evergreens and trees should be pruned before nesting season begins. Last April, it was a lucky break that I spotted a pretty Cardinal flitting in and out of this tree that was due to be severely pruned that very day. The pruning was canceled and the Cardinal raised her family in the twig nest you can see above. Here she is building her nest. You can check out the story at http://www.georgiabackyardnature.com/georgia_backyard_nature/2013/04/crafty-cardinal.html
The thick, tangled branches of hollies are especially attractive to birds that nest in trees, providing protection from the elements and cover for the nestlings. The Yaupon continued to grow wildly throughout the summer and I wanted to cut it back, but waited, not wanting to jeapordize another nest. Besides, December is the perfect time to severely prune hollies. So, this week I had all my tree pruning done and for the first time saw the intricate Cardinal nest that almost wasn't. Pruning will be done on time from now on!
I enjoyed reading this, and other posts, on your blog. My wife and I are both endeavoring to rewild our three acres in the Georgia Piedmont as much as possible. We are both into macro photography, and have enjoyed observing and photographing herps and insects in our backyard. I am a natural history educator who teaches online. If you get the chance, please check out my blog at www.commonplacenature.org
Kind regards,
Clifford
