I have a weakness for plants with interesting foliage so it's no surprise that I have a Thundercloud Purple-leaf Plum tree in my yard. In Spring this small tree is covered with pale pink blossoms which attract bees. Then it sprouts inky-purple leaves making it an arresting focal point for any landscape. Small purple fruits attract birds and other mammals.
Hardy in zones 4-9, the Thundercloud Purple-leaf Plum grows to only about 20-25 feet tall, perfect for the suburban yard. However, this tree needs regular watering, especially during a sustained dry spell.
When I planted the Thundercloud several years ago, the tree was just a twig, much too small to flower. Last year it only produced a few blossoms. Naturally, I was thrilled to see it covered in blooms last week. Now I can't wait to see those strking purple leaves.
