While out in the yard this afternoon, I saw the first Sasanqua blossoms of the season! The Sasanqua, a relative of the Camellia, and is also known as the Christmas Camellia. Sasanquas usually bloom in November and December and this year they’re right on schedule.
Sasanquas are hardy evergreens with dark glossy leaves, reaching 4 to 15 feet high. The one in the picture is on the small side, about 4 feet high. They prefer conditions similar to azaleas and rhododendrons: rich soil, good moisture, and dappled sunlight, but will tolerate full sun. Once established, they’re fairly drought tolerant.
The trees have lost most of their leaves and the annuals are fading fast, but the hot pink Sasanqua blooms liven up the garden with a pop of stunning color.
