Last year I wrote about Cat’s Whiskers, an interesting annual with white blooms along a spike. The multiple stamens are long and curved and actually look like a cat’s whiskers. These plants root very easily and it’s almost time to harvest cuttings and get them started for next spring.
Last fall, I cut as many stalks as I could and rooted them in water. As soon as they had nice roots, I put them in pots. But unfortunately the bitter winter weather made the garage too cold and only the one in the picture survived. This year, I think I’ll put them in the basement.
Rooting these exotic plants really pays off—they’re often very hard to find at local nurseries. I was lucky enough to buy one purple Cat’s Whisker plant this year which I’ll try to root as well. I want to make sure I have more Cat’s Whiskers to enjoy next summer.
