For most of the year, I don’t even notice the Flowering Quince. But in March it becomes downright showy, when it bursts into bloom with dozens of pink flowers. Blossoms only last a couple of weeks, then green foliage appears and it blends into the background again.
Flowering Quince is a deciduous shrub that grows 6-10 feet high and almost as wide. There are several varieties that bloom pink, red, and even apricot. It should be planted in full sun or partial shade. The one in my yard gets a little too much shade, so it hasn’t grown as fast, but it still blooms every spring. I fertilize it a couple of times a year with a general purpose fertilizer.
Even though the Flowering Quince isn’t that exciting most of the year, I still love it because it brings back fond memories of one that grew in my grandmother’s yard.
