A great way to dress up your house is to install a window box and load it with colorful annuals. There’s nothing better than seeing beautiful blossoms outside an upstairs window. If you’ve ever traveled in Germany, window boxes filled with vibrant red geraniums grace lots of houses, really racheting up the charm factor.
There are lots of choices now—metal, wood, plastic, and even self watering ones. Styles can match any house from contemporary to traditional and everything in between. Consider getting one that can be painted to match the trim on your house. Just be sure it’s securely attached, especially if it’s an upstairs window. The one in the picture has two plastic liners. It’s very convenient to lift out the liners, plant the flowers and pop them back in.
Match your plant choices to the type of sunlight your window box gets and mix it up. Using annuals that cascade over the box, like verbena, with ones that grow upright gives more color for the space! Window boxes need some TLC, though. I’ve learned that lots of water and fertilizer are a must. My window box gets the intense morning sun so it dries out pretty quickly. Clipping dead blossoms keeps it looking fresh and encourages more blooms.
Next year I think I’ll add another one—it’s a great decoration that can be enjoyed inside or out!
